On the ribbon, click the button that says "No Spacing" right next to the "Normal" button. To correct what you already have, press CTRL-A first to select everything.

There are two possible causes for this. One is the line spacing -- which has already been mentioned. The other is the before and/or after spacing for the paragraph itself. Both of these can be changed by highlighting all text which you wish to change and then selecting the Format / Paragraph menu (or right-click the highlighted text and select "Paragraph" from the context or drop-down menu). Then, in the Spacing section (of the Indents and Spacing tab) you'll see the Before and After settings along with the Line Spacing setting. Make your changes and click the OK button to complete the process.
Jut look for a menu drop-down list that includes line spacing. You must have it set to 2 or double spacing. Click 1 or single space and THAT'S IT.

PS: If you run into problems with Word, try using Help, you'll be surprised at how thoughrough it is, (easy to use too).
